What is an AI voice agent for car dealerships?
An AI voice agent is software that answers a dealership's customers on the phone and in website chat, in natural conversation, using the dealer's own stock, prices and diary. A good one answers "have you still got the grey Tucson?", quotes a representative finance figure, books the test drive and the MOT, and hands to a person with the transcript. A bad one is a chatbot that collects a phone number.

Why UK dealers are looking at this now
Customers research cars in the evening and at the weekend, and they expect an answer when they ask. A Moneypenny survey of 5,000 UK consumers and 200 automotive businesses, reported by AM-online, found that only 40% of consumers said 9am to 5pm support best met their needs, and 26% wanted access between 5pm and 9pm. Most showrooms are dark by then. The enquiry that lands at 21:14 is usually answered the next morning, if the customer has not already bought elsewhere.
An AI voice agent changes who answers first. It picks up the call or the chat immediately, at any hour, and does the part of the job that is really a lookup and a booking, so the salesperson's first contact is with a customer who already has a slot in the diary.
What a good AI voice agent does
- Answers from live stock. Price, availability, specification and location come from the dealer's own stock feed, refreshed as the feed updates. If a car is not on the list, it says so and offers the closest match.
- Books into real slots. Test drives, MOTs and services go only into times the service diary actually offers, and are confirmed to the customer and visible to the team straight away.
- Qualifies without a form. It asks about budget, fuel, mileage and how the customer wants to pay, then narrows the stock to the few cars that fit.
- Hands over with the transcript. When a customer asks for a person, or when a question is outside its brief, a member of staff gets the call with the conversation and the customer's details already in front of them.
- Reports what people asked for. Every conversation becomes a row: fuel, body style, budget, finance, postcode, time of day. Over a quarter that is a picture of demand the dealer cannot get from a web form.
What it must not do
- Invent a car, a price or a finance figure. Anything quoted has to trace back to the stock feed or a representative example the dealer approved.
- Book into a slot the diary does not have, or promise a courtesy car the site cannot provide.
- Keep a customer from a person. Asking for a human should always work, first time.
- Send customer conversations abroad for processing. Names, cars, budgets and finance details are customer data and should stay in the UK under UK law.
Voice and chat are the same agent
The phone line and the website chat should run on one agent with one set of rules, one stock source and one diary. A customer who starts on the website at night and phones in the morning should be recognised, not asked to start again. Separate suppliers for chat and calls tend to produce two half-answers and two lead records.
What to ask a supplier
- Where do prices and availability come from, and how often are they refreshed?
- Which diary does it book into, and can it book a slot you do not have?
- What happens when a customer asks for a person, and what does your team receive?
- Where is the customer data held and processed, and under which law?
- What does it connect to that we already run: stock feed, service diary, DMS or CRM?
- How long from signing to live, and what do we have to supply?
How Kestrel does it
Kestrel Automotive Intelligence builds AI voice agents for UK car dealerships. The Kestrel agent goes live with one script on the dealer's existing website and a number for the phone line, answers from the live stock feed, books test drives, MOTs and services into the service diary, and hands over to staff with the transcript. It runs on UK infrastructure under UK law, and each dealership's data is held separately. Going live takes days, not months. How going live works, and the questions dealers ask.
